Homework for 12-7-11

My Thoughts On The Project From Caeden:

I though the assignment Caeden made was pretty creative and fun, so kudos to Caeden. I thought because the project was to have the subject (food) be a certain color it exercised highlighting those colors. I of corse I especially enjoyed this project because food happens to be pretty much my favorite thing in the world.
For some reason I found it hard to find inspiration of how to best display the food. But sense the objects could really by anything which reminded us of food it was cool to experiment with different shapes and sizes.
I tried to capture types of food which I really like. I choose and apple, a pack of bacon and a bottle of Dr. Pepper. The apple was fun because its spherical and I could capture light on it in a cool way. The Dr. Pepper was cool because it was taller and round so there was a lot I could do with it. Finally the bacon was cool because well its bacon.

Thanks!

Independent Project:

Independent Project:
  1. The project is to create one image in pixelmator. It can be abstract, patterns an edited photo, etc. But is has to consist of editing or creating an image in pixelmator.
  2. When you do those two photos you need to keep track of the steps you create/edit the photo in.
  3. With those steps you wrote down make tutorials for the image. These tutorials should have step by step instructions to complete the photo and step by step screen shots of the photo as its be created. For example, you would have: "Step #1 - Open a new project in pixelmator with measurements of 5" wide and 7" high." And with that first step you would have a screen shot of a blank pixelmator window with the correct measurements.
  4. The two tutorials have to be at least 10 steps long with a screen shot for each step.
  5. For an example of what the finished project should be please check out this web page: http://www.pixelmator.com/tutorials/ticking-space/
  6. Post the tutorial to your blog.
  7. If the assignment doesn't make sense or if you have questions please call or email me at: 503.253.8109/lilbro9@gmail.com

Homework for 11-30-11

My thoughts about the assignment:

I was a fairly difficult assignment. In the past I have shot the same object a 5-6 times, but never 75! So this was a pretty new experience for me. I found it was challenging to figure out different ways to portray the same object multiple times. The assignment really made me think about how I could best show the object in different light, places, etc.
It was fun shooting the bowl because it was a odd shape and sense it is transparent I could show light coming through it in different ways. Also, because the bowl is a fancier object it was a cool contrast putting it in places where you wouldn't tend to find a glass bowl, like the middle of the street or in a yard.
On the other hand the hat was fun to shoot because I could do a larger amount of things with it and not have to worry about it breaking, like I did with the bowl. Although the hat was a simpler and it was harder to portray it different ways.
I hade a really fun time doing this assignment. It stretched me in different ways, like figuring out different ways to show the same object. I think this will help me in the future when I am shooting other objects, I can use the knowledge I learned here to shoot better images.

Homework for 11-9-11

This week I did research and wrote a paper on, Joe Cornish, a British photographer. He is best known for this large scale landscape photos and his variety images from around the world.

Paper:1112 GWS 11-7 CS2 Joe Cornish Paper PDF.pdf

I also choose ten of my favorite Photos of Joe Cornish. Here they are:

I really like the highlights of violet in this photo and the reflection of the sky on the water.

Even though this is a still photo, it really displays a lot of motion and that is what I like about it.

I love how this photo is almost a gradient, if you will. The sunrise on one side displays a mid amount of light, the middle is fairly dark and the right side is light and has a nice early-morning fell to it.

I like how this photo shows just a tad of that dawn/dusk orangeish light in the sky, while still keeping the great purple and blue colors.

I like how this photo seems vary natural, it just looks like a creek you would see on a hike. It really shows a great photographer when he can make the natural really unique and beautiful.

I just love everything about this photo and I would love to have it hang in my room someday. I love how it has that orangeish dawn/dusk coloring to it, I like the industrial feel it has to it, with the metal and city lighting. I just think it is a really well thought out and produced image.

I like the vineyard type feel the picture has, it makes you feel like your in the countryside of Italy or something of the sort.

This is the same bridge as in two photos above. I liked both of the images so much, so I just put them both on here. Among all the things I mentioned in the other photo of this bridge I like the accents of purple and yellow and the water reflections.

This photo is vary simple, yet very complex. Because it is a pretty close up picture you can see the textures in all of the rocks really well, I like that a lot.

This image is also vary simple, but I really like that, in fact it is my desktop picture right now. I like the reflections in the water and how they are not complex enough to get confusing.

Homework for 11-2-11

These are portrait shots that I had to take of a strangers. It was a tad awkward because, well they are strangers and it's kinda a weird thing when some random person comes up to you and asks to take your picture. All weekend I was staying in a hotel at the beach so the people I shot were the employees that work there.

So here they are:

This is my end product of the "vintage effect"tutorial from the pixelmator website. I got this effect by blurring, adjusting contrast, adding other pictures of textures over the top of the photo and changing the blending modes.

Homework for 10-26-11

I orginally took 164 pictures, I narrowed those down to 22 and with a lot of contemplating I choose, what I think, are the best five images to represent fall. Here they are . . .

Pictures to represent fall:

While I was shooting I came across this extremely colorful tree that you see above.
I edited the photo by making a curve in the red and green, as well
as changing the contrast, sharpening, exposure and others. I like the
photo because I feel like the colors really represent fall and I like the
contrast between the tree and sky.

In my neighborhood we have a really nice bike path where I took this
photo. I like the light shining across the path, as well as the leaves and shadows.
I edited the contrast, exposure, levels and curves. I like how the path disappears
in the distance and I think its funny and unique how the yellow lines are wavy.

I big part of the fall is well the leafs falling, I tried to show that in
this photo. I edited the contrast, exposure and a bunch of other stuff.
I like how the grass/leaves sort of disappear in the horizon.

I really really like the textures in this photo, I like how the leaf
is sort of crunched up and how the pavement is a bumpy background.
I edited the photo by sharpening it and turning up the contrast so you can
really notice the difference between the black asphalt, the pine
needles and the leaf.

I think the mixture of the colors in this picture are just amazing.
I love how the green tree and blue sky make a really awesome
background and then having the beautiful, vivid orange and yellow
leafs with the light shining through behind them. I edited the image
by turning up the brightness, exposure, contrast and sharpening to
make the colors shine through as vivid as they can.

Homework for 10-12-11 #2

I enjoy playing soccer. I choose to take and edit the photo this
particular way because I like how the ball is in focus and most
everything else is blurred.

I again, I feel the photo shows that I like soccer. I got the idea
for how to shoot to picture from other photos like it and Jonny
also suggested it.
By now you probably this that I am obsessed with soccer or something
from all the photos of soccer stuff that I have put up, but the fact is im
not really obsessed, but I thought these objects would look cool in a photo.
I wanted to make this picture look kind of old fashion, so that was what I
tried to do in the editing and shooting.
I think this was shows who I am because the pictures is of
the front of my house and my address. My home is a important
place for me because I know at home I can be just chill and I
know the people who live there with me will always be there and
won't judge me.
Music is a fun thing I do in my life. I think this
photo kinda shows that.
Two of my favorite things to wear are hats and ties. I wanted to
show that by putting this photo up here. =)
I have a chain-link fence attached to one wall in my room.
On that fence I hang: hats, jackets, magazines, ties and pretty
much everything else. I feel there is no better way to show
my personality through my photography then to take a
picture of where I hang all my stuff.

Thanks for reading.

Homework for 10-12-11

How do I view the world around me? Well, that is a very broad question and to be honest I don't really know how I view the world because I just view it, I don't really think about how I do. Some people look around them selfs and might try to look for creative or unique scenes or circumstances, in some ways I would say that I do the same, although like Jonny was saying everyone views different things as beautiful or creative. When I go to a new place and look around I try to take everything in and explore the area. I try to look for possible conflicts in the area as well as cool unique things as well. So all in all I would say the way I view the world around me is looking for new things while taking in the common things as well.
What inspires me? Cool, another broad question, I am starting to see a trend here. I am inspired by people or things that are better/more experienced then me. I am not going to be inspired by someone who is not a moral person because immorality is not something I strive for. I am going to be inspired by someone/something that is kind, generous, moral and has good integrity, because those are the kind strive for. So I guess what I am saying is that I am inspired by great things that I strive for, if that makes sense.
Who inspires me? This goes back to my last answer that I am inspired by things greater than me. Like a lot of people my parents inspire me. Just seeing everything they have to go through and deal with is really humbling, I mean they have to go through life with me as a son, thats enough to inspire me already ;). Other people in history like MLK, Theodore Roosevelt and such really inspire me because they did the hard stuff to stand out from the crowd and because of what they did they are remembered and respected to this day.
How does my personality come out in my photography? Everyone's personality and creative view are unique. So how my personality comes out in my photography is going to be different than anyone else. I take pictures of things that I think are cool and interesting. And the way I view things that are cool/interesting is apart of my personality, so thats one way my personality comes out through my photos. Another is that I can show feelings and my mood by what I take photos of. Say that I am feeling sad or lonely, maybe I will go out and take pictures of nature and quite things to express that feeling that I have.
What are my hobbies? I have lots of stuff I like to do, hang out with people I like, watch movies, play games, that kind of stuff. But if I had any actual hardcore hobbies they would be: listening/playing music, traveling (I don't really know if this counts as a hobby or not), but really I don't have that much that I spend lots of time on constantly. Some people have hobbies like crafts, reading, legos, etc., but I really don't enjoy that kind of stuff that much, I guess I am just weird.
What type of photography interests me the most? I would say nature, landscape, buildings/cities and time-lapse. I like the first two because you can use lots of natural light in those I enjoy working with natural light, its just cool. I really really like photographing cities just because its fun to include all the life that goes on in a place and you can really show the feel of the place. I really liked photographing New Orleans on the Heartlife road trip last year because of all the cool buildings and people and showing that in the pictures I took. The reason I like time-lapse is it shows progression and life moving, while using one still image instead of video. Doing time-lapse is something I look forward to learning from Jonny this year.

Please excuse my bad grammar, thanks!

Assignment Due: 10-5-11

What are my creative interests?

I don't really view myself as a very creative person, so as you might guess it is hard for me to list my creative interests, but here it goes. I enjoy doing creative type stuff on my computer I think a little more then I do physically. Although, I don't really mind pottery, drawing, painting and stuff like that I enjoy doing computery stuff like photo editing, simple graphic design and photography.
I kinda like figuring things out and math/logic type stuff. I also enjoy listening and attempting to play music. The musical instruments I mess around on include: ukulele, drums, keyboard and a little bit of guitar, so I guess those could count as creative interests. I find music really cool just because you can let out and feel emotion while listening/playing it. Some of my favorite bands are: Nickelback, Lifehouse, The Beatles, Switchfoot and a bunch of others.
I feel like my interests can relate to the class this year because, like I said before I like and want to learn more about technical kind of stuff and after all this is computers class so thats good. I am looking forward to a really great year, learning a lot more from Jonny Long and having a good time.

Some things I would like to learn more about this year are:

  • Getting deeper into photo editing on Pixelmator and others programs.
  • Learning more about photography such as:  Nature, Architecture/Buildings, Portrait, Light drawing and timelapse
  • Just getting deeper into our computer and learning new cool stuff that we can do with them.
  • While I don't find it fun it would be cool to improve on my typing skills this year.
  • Just learn as much as I can from Jonny, because he has so much to offer and teach us, I can't wait to dive into another school year of computers class.
Thanks for reading!

Homework for 4-27

What did I learn about blending modes from doing this assignment?

When working on editing my last picture using different layers and blend modes I learned somethings. I used blending modes such as; "Screen", "Dissolve" and just "Normal". These modes are going to be very helpful with really giving the image different emotions and effects. I particularly like the "Dissolve" effects because it made the background color, image or photo just kind of sink back in to it's background place that it should be (as seen in the bottom photo above).
